ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

My Honda Ridgeline 2017 it started to not accelerate and a lot of lights came on. Check engine light, power steering, cruise control, abs, etc. The truck only goes 20-23 mph and it wouldn't run. Thank God i wasn't in the high or i would have crashed. i went to my nearest autozone to see what was going on and they told me that the Camshaft position sensor is damage . and it do the fact that the camshaft is hitting the sensor. They took me that a lot of Honda's were having this problem. I should call the Honda Dealer. I then call them and told them was had happened, they responded that it would probably need a new engine or an rebuild. A

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

My 2017 Ridgeline had clicking noises in the dash and the interior lights were flickering, truck was in the garage at home. I was able to start the truck and move it outside. I was afraid it may be a short and start a fire. Upon turning off truck it started making the noises again and interior lights flickering. I took it to Honda the next day and after two days they claimed they couldn't figure it out but charged me to disconnect my after market amp and labor for diagnostic. Two days later the issue persisted. I called Honda again and brought it in, this time there was a code to read. The code was "keyless start system problem" so they ordered the module to fix it but explained that it was on backorder and there was no ETA on when I'd get the part. A few weeks later I was stranded at work because my truck had been trying to go into accessory mode all day with the horn blowing. This problem is very intermittent but if left it will drain the battery. It seems to be every 2-3 days that the problem happens.

POWER TRAIN

Potential Consequences:

I was driving and without any warning or indication that anything was wrong, I heard a loud clunk noise and immediately lost power to the wheels, but the engine continued running. I was barely able to get the vehicle to the shoulder before it came to a complete stop without me applying the brakes. A Police Officer came to assist and tried to push it, but even after shifting to neutral, the car would not move. The tow company had to drag it onto the flatbed because the front passenger wheel would not turn. The Honda Service Center indicated that the axle separated from the transmission. They are in the process of making repairs. While waiting for the tow truck, my car had to sit in a busy highway on ramp turn lane, nearly getting hit several times despite my hazard lights. Had this happened at a higher speed, busier road, or the highway, it could have been extremely dangerous to me and the cars around me. There were no warnings, messages, or other symptoms prior to the incident.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

Potential Consequences:

Was driving on 2 lane highway when truck suddenly decelerated, started shuddering, so I pulled to side of road. Dash lights started cycling through warning lights, ultimately settled on saying it was an emission system problem. Car would not accelerate beyond 30-35 miles an hour after that and would even then suddenly lose power then regain it. But still could not get above 30 or 35 miles an hour. Luckily, no one was behind when this happened and I was able to pull to the side of the road. Normally this is a 55-60 mile an hour busy 2 lane highway. And I was less than a mile from home so was able to limp home. The next morning, tried to drive to the dealer, and had to return home because it would speed up to 45-50, but then would do the same thing again that I described above. Had to get the car towed to the dealer. I checked the OBD scanner and it said the problem was P0087, Fuel Rail Pressure Too Low. Dealer said it was that the fuel pump needed to be replaced. Vehicle has about 93,000 miles and is a 2017 model. Don't have the repair invoice yet, picking up the vehicle and paying the $1,700 dollar repair bill this afternoon. Can provide it later if you need/want it.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

My wife was driving our 2017 Honda Ridgeline when the engine suddenly stopped running and she lost power steering. She was able to coast a short distance as close to the side of the road as possible. Luckily she was only a hundred yards or so from our house on a quiet side street, however if it had been 20-30 seconds earlier she would have been on the highway or in the middle of a major intersection. There were no warnings or any other indication of a problem. The engine would not start despite a full charge on the battery. After towing it to the dealer for service, the engine was completely seized and they diagnosed it as the connecting rod bearing. The only remedy offered was full engine replacement. Hours after paying $9k for the repair, we saw news articles about NHTSA Campaign 23V751000 for 2017 Honda Ridgelines regarding a manufacturing error for the connecting rod bearing causing engine wear and may cause the engine to seize. Exactly the issue with our 2017 Ridgeline. Our VIN does not show in the campaign, so I believe Honda has mistakenly narrowed the breadth of the campaign or surreptitiously removed our VIN by the dealer since we had already paid on our own. There is also no way for me to verify that the replacement engine will not suffer the same issue. We opted for a used engine over OEM to save money, but were intentionally not warned about the recall before making the choice.

POWER TRAIN

Potential Consequences:

The torque converter failed once already while driving at highway speed, creating an unsafe condition as the vehicle went into “limp mode”. After the torque converter was replaced in 2022, the vehicle has continued in 2023 to exhibit judder from the torque converter lock-up clutch (TSB 17-025 and TSB 17-026) which is symptomatic of the original failure. As recognized by Honda in TSB 23-078, the torque converter may also have been manufactured improperly which led to the warranty extension. The Honda dealership service has verified all steps in TSBs have been completed, and they do not know how to resolve the judder. The concern is the transmission and/or torque converter will fail again creating a subsequent unsafe condition. Despite numerous TSBs with potential fixes, they have been unsuccessful in resolving the defects, which suggests this systemic issue needs elevated to a recall.

SERVICE BRAKES

Potential Consequences:

At approximately 20mph, Forward collision warning appeared as car in front braked quickly but continued forward after the quick brake. After I braked to slow down, I began to accelerate as the vehicle in front continued forward. As soon as I hit the accelerator, the Automatic Emergency Braking kicked in and locked up the brakes - even though the car in front of me was 20-30+ feet away. Car behind me had to slam on their brakes as it appeared that I braked without any reason

Wireless Control Module left me stranded when it stopped working not allowing me to start my car. According to the dealership, they are seeing this issue and more striking is the amount of complaints online nationwide regarding 2016-18 Honda Pilots, which I only assume to be the same module as the Ridgeline. Had to tow my car three times in 2 days because only the dealership can fix this problem. I feel I needed to report just in case there were others that did, because this seems like it should be a recall item. It is currently at the dealership waiting for parts. Thank you for your time.

ENGINE

Potential Consequences:

Complete engine failure at 76,333. Vehicle failed after exiting highway after slowing down to merge with traffic on side road. There was no warning lights displayed prior to failure. It left my son and I trapped in an unsafe situation. Failure could have resulted in being rear ended and/or having an abrupt stop from the engine seizing had we not exited the highway when we did. The problem was confirmed by dealer as a complete engine failure (locked up) with no confirmed cause. We were unable to diagnose at independent repair shop as dealer had removed timing belt which was confirmed by dealer as being intact. All fluids were confirmed clean and sufficiently intact. There was no indication of problem or warning lights prior to complete failure. Dash displays indicated normal temperatures and pressures.
